Project Management Training: Evolving With The Times

by George H. Purdy

A project is defined as any assignment which has a fixed beginning and a definite end. In today's society, most work is based on project methodology. It would thus be imperative that we develop an understanding of projects and management tools and methods used in order to meet the project requirements. Management, technology, etc, are just a small portion of Projack Management training. Projects may involve all these areas, thus project management training must include training across the domains.

Let us consider a software development project as an example. A project is undertaken only after the need is justified and the desired result for the project should also be sincere. Only after understanding the requirements can the project be planned and the requirements have to be tested for different permutations and combinations. These requirements in a software development project are decided by a business researcher understanding that client/ relationship. Several requirement analysis software are available in the market and once the requirements are finalized and organized, the next chapter of project management begins.

Project completion requires resources and these resources carry a price tag as well. A project which takes out maximum value at minimum cost is considered as a good project. Project Managers use time allocation and management techniques to manage these resources. One way of doing this is through use of project management templates. Such templates often come along with worksheet software applications or are developed separately using these software tools. Hence, a good project management training must include training sessions on worksheet software tools for effective project management.

Any project involves two-way communication throughout the life cycle of the project. The feedback loop is of immense importance to project managers to understand the current status of project. Current status of project affects the project planning in future. Training in project management must therefore also include hands-on training on the communication tools being used in the particular project. Such training will reap in huge rewards. Communication training goes beyond mail software training. You must emphasize the relevance of routine check-ups during the life cycle of project.

Effective resource management involves proper allocation of right reosurces capable of doing tasks in a coherent manner in order that the project objectives are met. Human capital impacts Project cost directly or indirectly. Hence training in project management must include sessions on human organizational behavior, costing and human resource management. Such training must also include sessions on quality, value engineering and theory of constraints. The purpose of these theories are not just for educational purpose, but also for imbibing them as a practical guidelines for achieving the project goals. Therefore project management training must include tasks which involve application of the important learnings from the sessions.

Recently, some trainers have started illustrating project management concepts by using specially designed computer games. The essence of these games lies in their approach of involving the learner to use project management technology. These games are focussed in their approach towards training of project management concepts. Course assessments can be used to appraise the results of such game based training. We can safely sum up that training should not involve only teaching of traditional project management philosophies but also have the involvement of the learner,by having him perform tasks using the project management technology.

Project management training helps in understanding of project management tools and techniques. Planning a software development project requires understanding the requirements, before the next stage. Project Managers use time project management templates for allocation and management techniques to manage resources. Feedback is essential for managers to understand the projects current status, as the future planning depends on it. Projects also involve humans, due to which project training must include sessions on human behavior and other operational aspects. Some trainers have started illustrating project management concepts by using specially designed computer games. These games have the involvement of the learner, by having him perform tasks using the project management technology.
